Unit 9 in Fundations took us a bit longer to master. Therefore, we will be completing unit 9 and taking the assessment this week. We will continue to learn about vowel teams and r-controlled vowels. The Trick Words for the week are: between, see and each. This week during our Writers Workshop block, students will begin to revise and edit their work. We hoping to have our first story finalized by next week. The children have been working hard on editing their own work and helping to edit their peers work. This week in math, we will jump ahead and beginning working on module 5. Module 5 focuses on geometry, telling time and has an introduction to money. This is a short and we’ll jump back to module 4 when we are done. I wanted to tie in this unit with our K-4 collaboration working with shapes and pattern blocks. We will be meeting in our collaborative groups again this week to continue our exploration of patten blocks.

This week we will be wrapping up our Witt and Wisdom unit on Powerful Forces. Students will compare and contrast some of the stories we’ve read during this unit. Student’s will continue to work on personal narratives during our Writers Workshop block. This week we will begin writing a beginning, middle and end to our story. We will also focus on adding details, use of transitional words and peer editing. Students are beginning to proofread their work and are finding errors and other things to edit. We will continue to work on the 9th unit in Fundations. This unit will focus on vowel teams and introducing syllables. The trick words for the week are: see, between and each This week in math, we will be exploring collecting data and the use of graphing and tally marks. We will also be completing our end of unit assessment.

Our Witt and Wisdom story for the week will be "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" by William Kamkwamba. This is a true story about William’s wit, determination and the powerful force of wind. This thought provoking and inspiring story will help generate many “I wonder” questions from the children. Students are encouraged to ask these questions to help gain knowledge on the story and to help build their comprehension.
This week we will be beginning a Writer Workshop block. Everyday we will be focusing on a new writing technique or strategy. This week we will begin our unit on personal narratives. Students will choose a small moment memory and hone in on the details that surround the memory. Students will brainstorm their ideas, create a beginning, middle and end to their story. They will not be creating the final product this week. This unit will take at least 3 weeks from start to final publication.

Eureka math finds us exploring standard and non-standard forms of measurement. Students will learn why its important to measure with a consistent unit.
Science this week will involve creating some fun art work with the help of the powerful force of wind and air.

Our Wit and Wisdom focus in ELA continues to be the powerful force of the wind. The focus story this week will be "Brave Irene." We will also continue to work on base words and suffix -s. Students will also begin working with transitional words; first, then, next , finally, when writing a “how to” paragraph.
The children are enjoying our measurement unit in math. This week students will measure with centimeter cubes. Please continue to work on addition and subtraction facts at home.
Last week we were not able to have our K-4 Collaborative Arts Program; however, we are hoping that we will be ready to start this week. We are looking forward to having fun, making new friends and learning together!

We will continue with our Witt and Wisdom unit on Power Forces. This week we will read "Owl At Home" by Arnold Lobel. Students will investigate how the author uses personification to represent the wind. We will also continue to work on verb tenses and suffix -s. We have begun our 3rd module in math. This module will focus on measurement. During the week we will learn about “end points” and how we use these to properly mesure items. We will compare 2 items to determine which one is “longer than” or “shorter than” Beginning this week, we will be part of a K-4 Collaborative Arts Program! We will meet in mixed age groups and explore shapes with pattern blocks. The goal of this time together is to work collaboratively for create a project. Every other week, we will meet and build upon on original design that they will create this week. We are looking forward to having fun, making new friends and learning together!

The focus book for the week will be "Gilberto and the Wind" by Marie Hall Ets. Children will explore how the character of the story responds to the powerful force of the wind. Students will continue to explore adjectives and will identify them within the story. Students will be introduced verb tenses. Students will identify verbs and will sort them on their tenses. This week, student will begin unit 8 of Fundations. In this unit, students will be introduced to R-controlled vowels: ar, or,ir,ur and er. We will also focus on consonant blends. Blends are when two or more consonants are together and each sound can be pulled apart. The trick words for the week are: could, would, should In math, students are continuing to work on subratcting within 20. This week we will be focusing on story problems and pulling out the important details to help us solve the problems. We will begin begin our next FOSS science unit Air and Weather. Our first investigations will explore what is air and what can air do.

Due to our 3 snow days, this week will be a continuation of what was supposed to be covered last week. We will continue with our Powerful Forces module. This weeks focus book will be Feelings by Aliki. We will be focusing on the “powerful” words and adjectives within this story. During Fundations we will finish up unit 7. We spent a little extra time on this unit to try to solidify our glued sound recognition. The -unk, -onk, -ung, -ong have been the trickiest glued sounds. We will be completing our end of unit assessment Thursday and Friday. Thursday we will celebrate our 100th day of school!! We will be celebrating the day with kindergarten and 2nd grade. We will be breaking up into mixed groups to have some collaborative 100th day activities. We will do our mixed grade celebrations from 10:00-11:00. However, we will be doing 100th Day writing and math activities throughout the day within our own classroom. Students have the opportunity to get creative and dress up 2 days this week. On Thursday, they are welcomed to dress up as a 100 year old person. On Friday, we will have our Library Day Celebration. Students can dress up as your favorite storybook character. Thank you to Annabelle’s mom, Mrs. Darah, for all her hard work and dedication to make out library great!!

First grade friends are beginning to work on subtraction within 20. Please continue to work at home on addition facts. Students fluency skills are improving!
Our second week of our Powerful Forces module, will be focusing on feelings. This weeks focus book will be Feelings by Aliki. This book ties in perfectly with our Second Step curriculum. Students are getting really good at identifying the feelings of others based on facial expressions and body language.
During Fundations we will finish up unit 7. We spent a little extra time on this unit to try to solidify our glued sound recognition. The -unk, -onk, -ung, -ong have been the trickiest glued sounds. This week we will begin our 3rd module from Witt and Wisdom called Powerful Forces. This week we will read a poem titled The Wind by James Reeves. We will reintroduce verbs and identify the verbs within our poem. We are continuing to work on glued sounds during our Fundations time. This week we will focus on the -ink, -ing, -ang, -ank glued sounds. The trick words for the week are very, too and also. During our math time, we will continue to work on our addition facts to 20. Focusing on becoming fluent with +10, +9 +8 and +7. By the end of the week, we will move onto subtraction facts using -10 and -9.

First grade friends will be finishing up Module 2 : Creature Features. Within this unit, students have learned many interesting facts about many different animals. The end of the unit assessment requires students to choose one of these aminals, and write an informative paragraph. For this assessment, students will write a topic sentence, 2 detailed sentences about their animal and a conclusion sentence. This will be the first lengthy writing sample first graders will complete and I’m confident they are up for the challenge. During our math time, our class continues to work on adding numbers within 20. We are working on strategies when solving problems with +10, +9 and +8. During Fundations we continuing to work on unit 7. This week we will learn the glued sounds -ank, -unk,-onk, -ink. The trick words for the week are put and two.
