7th & 8th Grade Math and Science

March 22, 2017

This week in seventh and eighth grades science students will continue to study propulsion. In seventh grade math, students are studying volume, surface area and area. In eighth grade math students are studying about roots and irrational numbers. As a reminder, all students need to bring in an old shirt to wear as a smock for the mural project. Also, we are doing the great kindness challenge this week, so encourage kind acts in your home and community.

In seventh grade math this week, students will continue learning about circumference, area and surface area. In eighth grade math, students will be learning about square roots, the Pythagorean theorem, radicals and irrational numbers. In science we will begin studying about propulsion in relation to our coaster cars.

In seventh grade math, we are working on inequalities. Students are learning how to graph and solve one and two step inequalities. In eighth grade math, we are working on scatter plots and linear functions. In science, the students will be testing the speed of the coaster cars.

In seventh grade this week, we are going to study about inequalities and linear equations. In eighth grade, students will study scatter plots and model linear functions. In science, we are putting propellers on our coaster cars and will calculate its speed.

This week in eighth grade math, we are finishing up our study of linear functions. Students learned how to graph linear function and identify non linear functions. We will have a math test this week for eighth grade math. In seventh grade math, we are finishing our study of integers and linear equations. Students will have a test this week. In science, students will alter their coaster cars to maximize the distance and decrease the veer. On Friday, we have a field trip to the Museum of Science in Boston.

Thanks to Yadira Nieves, GCCSA Parent and Social Worker who works with youth and adolescents, for volunteering her time in a discussion group with our 7th graders. This session was attended by each of the 7th grade students in attendance on January 27, 2017, as well as Mrs. Kone, Mrs. White, Mrs. Wessels, Mrs. Kosofsky, and Mrs. Cevasco. We were immediately impressed with students' ease, their willingness to participate, and their responses. Each day, these 7th graders become a stronger, cohesive groups of thoughtful and engaged individuals--each at their own pace and in their own way.

This week in eighth grade math, we are continuing our studies on linear functions. Students will learn about the real world application of linear equations. In seventh grade math, students will be learning about the distributive property and factoring. We will also finish up our unit on solving linear equations. In science, we are continuing our studies on coaster cars and specifically with friction. Students will try to troubleshoot their cars to determine how to reduce friction so that their cars can go farther.
